Top Five Factors When Choosing Hydraulic Fittings

Properly working hydraulic systems are critical to machinery and equipment used in a wide range of industrial applications.  Whether heavy duty construction equipment, drilling or mining equipment, skid steer machines or industrial presses used in manufacturing, maintaining a reliable and leak free hydraulic quick connect system is important. Choosing the right hydraulic quick connect fittings requires careful consideration of several different factors.

Careful consideration should be given to the process, the type of connection, the attachment style and the following top five factors:

1.  Application - the application which requires a hydraulic fitting is a critical consideration in choosing the right quick connect and disconnect solution.  Following this STAMP acronym is common practice for selecting hoses as well as quick couplers: Size, Temperature, Application, Media and Pressure are all important factors which help select the right quick coupler.
2.  Pressure Rating - many OEM products require DIN metric fittings and O-ring face seals for increased pressure readings.  The most common quick couplers with NPT and JIC fittings do not support high pressure applications particularly with high vibration.  Specialty quick couplers may be required for these applications.

3.  Availability - quick connect fittings with NPT and JIC port options have been around for a long time and are readily available.

4.  Versatility – JIC hydraulic fittings are known for versatility and can connect to many American and foreign port sizes.

5.  Reliability – NPT hydraulic fittings are popular and can usually be tightened to prevent leaks. This can lead to cracking, however, as can also occur with JIC fittings during aggressive wrenching. Hydraulic couplers which utilize an O-ring with DIN metric fittings can reduce the effects of excessive torque and provide increased reliability with elastomer seals in the mating face.
